AMD Ryzen logoThe AMD Ryzen 5 3600 from the Matisse processor family has 6 CPU cores based on the « Zen 2 » architecture . After « Zen » and « Zen + », this is the third generation of Zen micro-architecture, which, thanks to advanced 7-nanometer manufacturing, offers not only a decent increase in clock rate and thus performance, but also modern new features. Paired with an AMD X570 or B550 chipset, the Ryzen 5 3600 supports the PCI Express 4.0 standard that is twice as fast as its predecessor . All Ryzen 3000 processors use the proven AM4 platform and can basically also run on older chipsets.

The AMD Ryzen 5 3600 at a glance:

AMD Ryzen 5

  • 6 « Zen 2 » cores with only 65 watt thermal design power (TDP)
  • 12 threads thanks to simultaneous multithreading (SMT)
  • Very high single and multi-thread performance
  • Base clock of 3.6 GHz & 4.2 GHz Turbo with Precision Boost 2
  • Extremely fast PCI Express 4.0 interface (only with AMD X570 or B550)
  • Auto-Overclocking Precision Boost Overdrive (only with AMD X570 or B550)
  • Free multiplier for manual overclocking (unlocked CPU)
  • Very large cache memory: 3 MB L2 & 32 MB L3
  • Highly efficient, non-planar 7 nanometer FinFET transistors
  • AVX2 instruction set extension for complex vector calculations
  • Two AES units for fast, reliable data encryption
  • Compatible with the AMD AM4 processor socket
  • Natively supports DDR4-RAM with 3,200 MHz (dual-channel)
  • Note: Tray version without CPU cooler!

The AMD Ryzen 5 3600 6-core CPU with 4.2 GHz Precision Boost 2

AMD Ryzen 5 box

The AMD Ryzen 5 3600 has six physical CPU cores that, thanks to Simultaneous Multithreading (SMT), can each process two threads at the same time, so that the number of computing cores with the additional six virtual cores effectively doubles to 12. The six-core mid-range model works with a high clock rate of 3.6 GHz per core, which adapts precisely to the respective load scenario in real time using Precision Boost 2 and from 65 watts to 4.2 GHz within the scope of the Thermal Design Power (TDP) Turbo increased.

The silicon of the CPU cores is made in the advanced 7 nm FinFET manufacturing processLithographed with stacked transistors (also called 3D transistors) using Extreme Ultraviolet Technology (EUV). The space gained on the processor die thanks to the greatly reduced structure sizes enables the integration of a total of 3 MB level 2 cache and a full 32 MB level 3 cachethat are particularly important for games. The I / O chiplet in the CPU package responsible for the data lines is produced using 12 nanometer FinFET production and provides 24 PCIe lanes, four of which are used to connect to the mainboard chipset and to connect NVMe SSDs are reserved. This leaves 16 lanes for communication with graphics cards, while additional PCIe lanes are provided for additional data carriers, expansion cards and peripheral devices depending on the mainboard chipset.

PCI-Express 4.0 with AMD X570 or B550 chipset

AMD Ryzen 5 boxIn combination with an AMD X570 or B550 high-end chipset, the AMD Ryzen 5 3600 supports version 4.0 of the PCI Express standard. PCIe 4.0 is downward compatible and can be used with all expansion cards from previous generations. A data transfer rate that is twice as high as PCIe 3.0 is possible for each PCIe 4.0 lane, so that an NVMe SSD connected via four PCIe 4.0 lanes can achieve a theoretical read / write speed of up to 7.8 GB / s.

The AM4 platform also offers contemporary external device connections such as USB 3.1 Gen 2 with type A and / or type C plugs and high data transfer rates of up to 10 Gbit / s. The integrated memory controller of the CPU supports fast and energy-efficientDDR4 main memory in dual-channel mode with or without ECC error correction at a native clock frequency of 3,200 MHz, with significantly higher clock rates possible through overclocking.

Automatic overclocking through Precision Boost Overdrive

Precision Boost OverdriveHardly anyone has to worry about overclocking with the AMD Zen 2, because the CPU takes care of it all by itself: the AMD Ryzen 5 3600 is equipped with the Auto-OC feature Precision Boost Overdrive , which overclocks the processor clock by up to 200 MHz can increase the limit of the maximum boost clock set at the factory, provided an AMD X570 or B550 motherboard is used and sufficient CPU cooling is ensured.

High-end motherboards with the AMD X570 or B550 chipset usually have additional voltage converters (VRMs) so that the Ryzen 5 processor communicates with the X570 chipset in order to call up any unused energy reserves of the motherboard and, depending on the CPU temperatures to independently increase its clock rates.

Unlocked CPU: Manual overclocking thanks to the free multiplier

In addition, all AMD Ryzen CPUs are « unlocked » and have – as usual with the « Black Editions » and « K » versions of earlier model series – a free multiplier , so that overclockers can easily access the high clock rates by hand in the BIOS or UEFI or via Software tools (e.g. AMD Ryzen Master) can further increase, provided a corresponding motherboard with an OC-capable chipset such as the AMD X570 or B550 and sufficient additional cooling.

Notes: For PCI-Express 4.0 and Precision Boost Overdrive, an AM4 motherboard with an AMD X570 or B550 chipset is required. Older chipsets of the 300 and 400 series require a BIOS / UEFI update to operate this CPU.
